Strategic Analysis

The first step in any planning effort should be to gather the facts. Too often we make significant judgments about where the direction of our business should go without really getting understanding the realities of what we face today. This is the solid foundation necessary to build our strategies for the future.

To get to the purpose and essence of this analysis we need to ask two questions:

  • What is going on outside our organization that will impact us in the next few years?   To answer this question, we look outside the company, and into the future. It is generally expressed in two ways - - Opportunities (our best chances for progress and advancement) and Threats (outside issues that we do not control, but could affect our business if we make no preparation for it.)

  • What is going on inside our organization that will impact us in the next few years?  This second question is primarily internally oriented, and focuses on the present.  It is generally expressed in two ways- - our Strengths (our major internal advantages) and our Weaknesses (our major internal issues, problems and concerns).
